US starts terminating more than one thousand employees

(MENAFN)
The US State Department began terminating over 1,300 employees on Friday as part of a wide-ranging internal overhaul initiated by the Trump administration, according to various media reports.

Citing an internal communication, reports stated that 1,107 civil service employees and 246 foreign service officers were issued layoff notices via email. Foreign service personnel affected by the "Reduction in Force" notifications are being placed on administrative leave for 120 days, while most civil service staff will be granted a 60-day notice period.

Including resignations and those opting for early departures, the total number of staff leaving the department is projected to near 3,000, according to the same reports.

Documents reportedly reviewed by the media indicated that termination emails were expected to begin reaching domestic staff by Friday morning. Sources added that a significant portion of the overall cuts stem from employees who accepted the administration’s “deferred resignation” incentive.

Originally outlined in May by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the restructuring aims to reduce the State Department’s domestic workforce by roughly 15%.

Critics of the initiative have raised concerns that the downsizing could impair US diplomatic effectiveness at a time of escalating tensions and conflicts involving Ukraine, Iran, and Gaza. They also allege that the reorganization disproportionately impacts divisions dedicated to human rights, refugee programs, war crimes investigations, and support for democratic institutions.
