Merz Endorses Trump Plan to Arm Ukraine
(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed support for US President Donald Trump's declaration that America will supply new weaponry to Ukraine, with European partners assuming the expenses.
"President Trump has taken an important initiative today: The US will provide Ukraine with weapons on a large scale if the European partners finance this," Merz stated late Monday.
The Chancellor mentioned that he and Trump have deliberated over this fresh strategy several times in recent days, highlighting that Germany intends to play a "decisive role" in this effort.
“We (Europeans) are doing this in our own interest. This will help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's bombing terror. Only in this way will the pressure on Moscow increase to finally negotiate peace,” Merz explained.
He further added, “After all, we are showing that we, as security partners, are pulling together. Now we will quickly clarify the details. We are in contact with our partners to this end.”
During a Monday gathering with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Oval Office, Trump voiced his dissatisfaction with Russia over the stalled peace negotiations in Ukraine.
Trump warned that if a peace agreement is not achieved within 50 days, he would impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russia.
Additionally, he revealed a new plan where the US will produce and provide arms to Ukraine via NATO, with European allies covering the entire financial burden.
