India-China ties ‘gradually moving’ to good place

(MENAFN) India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Monday that relations between New Delhi and Beijing have been steadily improving over the past nine months. He made these remarks during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, while visiting China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers’ summit.

Jaishankar credited the progress to efforts in resolving tensions along the disputed border and maintaining peace in those areas. “Since our leaders met in Kazan in October 2024, relations between India and China have been steadily moving in a positive direction,” he said, stressing the importance of maintaining this momentum.

A key step toward easing tensions came from talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan, which helped cool relations strained since the deadly 2020 border clash in the Himalayas.

In Beijing, Jaishankar emphasized the need to continue strengthening ties, noting, “We have agreed before that differences should not become disputes, and competition must never escalate into conflict. On this basis, we can continue to advance our relationship positively.”

He also thanked China for once again allowing Indian pilgrims access to religious sites in Tibet after a five-year hiatus. Jaishankar highlighted that such steps to normalize people-to-people exchanges could lead to greater mutual cooperation. He further called for the removal of trade restrictions, implicitly criticizing Beijing’s limitations on fertilizer and rare earth magnet exports to India.

Earlier the same day, Jaishankar met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, stressing the importance of continuing to normalize relations. Han stated that fostering cooperation and realizing a “dragon-elephant tango” would benefit both nations.

Jaishankar also voiced India’s support for China’s leadership of the SCO. The Council of Foreign Ministers of SCO member states is set to convene in Tianjin on Tuesday.
