S. Korea Reports No Radiation Found After Suspected N. Korea Leak
According to media, experts carried out examinations at 10 locations earlier this month. The tests focused on detecting uranium, cesium, and five categories of heavy metals, the Unification Ministry reported.
“The results showed no abnormalities,” stated ministry deputy spokesperson Chang Yoon-jeong.
Earlier in July, South Korea revealed it had collected water samples from 10 sites, including Ganghwa Island and the Han River estuary. These locations were specifically chosen for analysis due to their proximity to the suspected contamination area, and samples were tested for radioactive elements like uranium and cesium, along with various heavy metals.
The testing effort was prompted by recent claims that North Korea may have released wastewater from its Pyongsan County uranium refinery into the Ryesong River, which flows southward toward South Korea.
While the latest analysis indicates no signs of contamination, Chang emphasized that the government will maintain heightened vigilance. South Korea plans to conduct monthly monitoring at seven critical sites to uphold public safety and ensure continued transparency.
As of now, North Korea has not issued any public statement in response to the allegations or the test results.
