Senator: Australia Must Join Hague Group on Palestine to Stop Genocide

(MENAFN) On Friday, Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government to align with the Hague Group on Palestine, emphasizing Australia’s responsibility to support global initiatives aimed at preventing genocide and ensuring justice for offenders.

Thorpe commended over 20 nations whose delegates convened Wednesday in Bogotá, agreeing to pursue coordinated legal and diplomatic strategies against Israel for its ongoing breaches of international law in Gaza and the West Bank.

"This is what real action to end genocide looks like," Thorpe declared in a statement posted on X.

The Bogotá meeting was spearheaded by the Hague Group—a coalition of Colombia, South Africa, Bolivia, Cuba, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, and Senegal. Established earlier this year in the Netherlands, the coalition’s mission is to hold Israel accountable through international legal frameworks.

Additional participants included representatives from Türkiye, Brazil, Portugal, Algeria, Lebanon, Oman, Uruguay, Bangladesh, Chile, Djibouti, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as Palestinian delegates.

Numerous countries signed a declaration committing to joint measures such as suspending arms exports to Israel, obstructing military shipments by sea, and reassessing government contracts to sever ties with companies involved in the occupation.

“Australia must join global efforts to prevent genocide and hold perpetrators to account. At an emergency summit in Bogota, the Group announced coordinated diplomatic, legal, and economic actions to hold Israel accountable. Australia was invited — but chose not to attend,” Thorpe stated.

She urged the Labor government to endorse the agreement and support her "Red Lines Bills," which she introduced alongside Senator Fatima Payman in Parliament. According to Thorpe, this legislation would align Australia’s policies with the Hague Group’s initiatives and its international legal duties.
