Iran Warns of Possible Nuclear Escalation

(MENAFN) A senior Iranian lawmaker has issued a stark warning that Iran could pull out of a pivotal nuclear weapons treaty and intensify its uranium enrichment efforts if Western European nations choose to reintroduce stringent economic sanctions on the country.

Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, shared these concerns with a news agency on Saturday.

Rezaei cautioned the United Kingdom, France, and Germany of the potential repercussions should they activate the so-called snapback provisions from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

He emphasized that such a step would compel Iran to explore various counteractions, including withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), enriching uranium to more than 60% purity, and producing and exporting advanced centrifuge machines.

Furthermore, Rezaei pointed out that Iran “has not fully exploited its capacities so far” and that it could resort to other strategic measures if required.

The NPT is an international treaty designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons while promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

It has been signed by 191 countries, making it one of the most widely recognized arms control agreements in history.

However, notable countries such as India, Pakistan, Israel, and South Sudan have not signed the treaty, and North Korea withdrew in 2003.
