Russia Prepared to Act Swiftly Toward Ukraine Peace Talks
In an interview with a Russian journalist, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, “Russia is ready to move quickly (on the issue of the settlement in Ukraine).” He underscored that “the main thing for us is to achieve our goals. Our goals are clear, obvious, they do not change,” while noting that the peace process is not solely under Moscow’s control.
Russia launched its so-called "special military operation" in Ukraine in February 2022, aiming to "denazify" and "demilitarize" the country.
As part of its conflict resolution demands, Moscow has insisted on Kyiv’s commitment to refrain from joining any military alliances and the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson—territories annexed by Russia following a referendum in September 2022.
Kyiv has rejected these conditions as an “ultimatum” and insists that a ceasefire must precede any substantive negotiations.
When questioned about a potential summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Peskov described such a meeting as “necessary” and anticipated it would occur “in time.” He suggested that formalizing major agreements beforehand could pave the way for the talks.
“But that time has not yet come. That work still needs to be done,” he added.
Trump, who resumed efforts to end the war in his second term starting January, warned of imposing 100% secondary tariffs on Moscow if a resolution is not achieved within 50 days.
Meanwhile, in May and June, Russia and Ukraine held the first direct talks in three years in Istanbul. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that Kyiv has proposed a new round of negotiations for the upcoming week.
