EU Prepares Tariff Retaliation List
The White House has accused its trading partners of unfair commercial practices and has employed tariff threats as a negotiation tactic.
Meanwhile, Brussels asserts it is striving for a diplomatic resolution but is making preparations for retaliatory actions if discussions fail.
Diplomats revealed to reporters that the list of targeted goods was finalized on Thursday morning.
Hungary stood as the only EU member opposing the measure, as reported by a news agency.
This document combines two previously created lists, one of which was endorsed in April after US President Donald Trump announced tariffs on European steel and aluminum.
EU trade spokesperson Olof Gill explained to journalists earlier this week that the decision to merge the lists was intended to make the retaliatory measures “clearer, simpler, and stronger.”
Meanwhile, Russian officials have contended that the EU remains susceptible to US pressure, depicting the bloc’s leadership as weak and overly compliant with Washington’s policies.
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chair of the Russian Security Council, commented in April that as Western countries pull back from commerce with Russia, Moscow should “take a seat on the shore and wait for the enemy’s corpse to float by. In this case, the decaying corpse of the EU economy.”
